About the event
ABOUT
Disapointingly, abuse is not a rare occurrence. It is hauntingly common, heartbreakingly underreported, and angeringly enabled by standers-by. How do we effectively protect children and young people? What is abuse and how is it distinct from other types of 'harm'? And, in the worst case scenario, if someone experiences abuse, what is the most effective method of accountability?
As a abolitionist and youth liberationist, these are questions I consider often, questions we will begin to answer in this vitally impoartant workshop. 'Anti-child ageism' (aka the oppression of children) and abuse are deeply interconnected and, in many cases, synonymous. However, ageism continues to be one of the least acknowledged forms of social violence, rampant in both right-wing and “leftist” spaces.
Many of us have an insufficient analysis of patriarchy as a whole, beyond gendered hierarchy, but this workshop offers an opportunity to learn about the ageism within it from the often unheard perspective of a teenager. This is a workshop for those of all ages who want to gain a fuller understanding of ‘anti-child ageism’ (coined by me, Aiyana Goodfellow) as part of the patriarchal system, particularly with regards to abuse.
We will…
- Define the adult/child binary
- Outline ideologies and hierarchies of abuse
- Explore how patriarchal gender and age constructs reinforce each other
- Learn about psychiatry's protection of patriarchy
- Discuss approaches to accountability
- Plan practical and DELINQUENT ways to respond to ageist abuse
- and more!
This two-part workshop is part of Why You Hate Kids 102, a analytical course exploring anti-child ageism and uses theories I outline in my second published book INNOCENCE & CORRUPTION: An abolitionist understanding of youth oppression.
